parkway because of poles across the highway. there's a portion of south lee road closed between joyce and hay street because of utility work as well. crew in skyfox is checking out the drive. actually we're going to the video. overnight an accident, a utility pole was struck and you can see the wires. that portion is closed between joyce and hayes, until hopefully around noon. no problems to report leaving the fairfax county parkway. 395 traffic slowing briefly at duke street. back inside quickly and we'll update the ride here, eastbound 66, no incidents to report. traffic volume is heavy out of manassas. slowing 50 to 123 and towards the beltway. southbound 270 with lanes open, no issues reported. trffic slow leaving 118 to 124. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. we have breaking news now from israel, where police say a

young american opened fire at a hotel killing one person. israeli anti-terror units stormed the hotel and shot the american dead. he is described as in his 20s and may have been a former worker at the hotel. one report says he was on a work program that brings american jews to the red sea resort. turning now to the race for the white house, both presidential candidates will be in virginia today. in a few hours president obama heads to fairfax to george mason university. meanwhile, mitt romney is headed to the southwestern part of the state to rally coal supporters. anticipated september jobs report comes out in about an hour and a half. as doug luzader explains, it could have a big impact on the presidential race. >> reporter: this is the unemployment rate since president obama took office.

it's been up and down, but all the focus today will be here at the very end, where it heads right before the election. for the white house, today's unemployment numbers probably confirm a cold reality, there just isn't much time left now for a major turnaround in the labor market before election day. the news from analysts may not be encouraging. >> we think the economy is going to be very sluggish as people sit back and wait to see how this fiscal cliff issue is dealt with by the new legislature and executive. >> reporter: that fiscal cliff is a combination of tax hikes and spending cuts due to hit at the end of the year after the election. the president coming off with what was widely seen as a lackluster debate performance, was in wisconsin yesterday with new found vigor. >> i want to export more products and outsource fewer jobs. >> reporter: that is a message he'll no doubt repeat at a

campaign stop in virginia today. job growth is in positive territory, but not by much. and through so many months, it's been outpaced by population growth. mitt romney will be poised to strike, arguing that the unemployment rate understates the problem. >> if the same share of the workforce were engaged in looking for a job now as when the president took office, the unemployment rate wouldn't be at 8.1%, it will be 11.2%. >> reporter: both campaigns will be looking beyond today's numbers. october numbers come out on november 2nd, four days before the election. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. another big story developing today. health officials warn thousands more people could be at risk of getting a deadly form of

>> we want to stay ahead of the curve and make sure we're proactive. >> reporter: richard jenkins may have been exposed. he was given three injections at a hospital in tennessee. he says he was contacted by health officials but not given clear instructions on how to proceed. >> they didn't say anything about the meningitis outbreak or if i needed to take precautio or symptoms to notify them or whatever. >> reporter: foothers, the warning came too late. >> to have a shot, six days later you're fighting for your life, and you lose your life. >> reporter: so far, all who have contracted the meningitis also received steroid shots for back pain. one new york doctor says the outbreak is the worst he's seen in decades. >> i've been safely giving epidural steroid injections for 22 years, and have never seen this or heard of anything like

this. >> officials say the outbreak could get bigger. more than 17,000 vials have been shipped out with an unknown number of the vials reaching 100 facilities in 23 different states. it's important to note this form of meningitis is not contagious, as it's just ice lighted to those -- isolated to those who got the shots. it's scary to think how this unfolded. we hope no one else gets caught up in this. >> and we hope all those who need to be notified are notified quickly. >> thank you. a man jumped from a burning apartment on k street last night and was critically injured. he was rushed to the hospital and has potentially life- threatening injuries. three others were rescued by firefighters. two were treated for breathing thick black smoke coming from that blaze. a firefighter was also treated for a hand injury. police are asking residents in nature fax county to be --

fairfax county to be on the lookout. a fondler is targeting women in the springfield area. sherri ly is there live and has more details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning allison. this serial fondler strikes any time, morning, midday and at night. the latest victim here in this springfield neighborhood. he has victimized now at least five women or teenaged girls, possibly more. police released a sketch of the suspect based on descriptions from the victims. in his 30s, neatly trimmed beard. he has fondled five people, usually approaching from behind. he gropes them and runs away. it's happened now at three different locations all in the springfield area. a fifth victim just came forward after police released information on the case. police want to get him off the streets. >> clearly he hasn't shown signs of stopping. so that's the concern, is that

making headlines this morning, for the first time a team of fbi agents has arrived in benghazi and has already left the city. the agency is investigating last month's deadly attack on the american consulate. they have 60 days to issue a report. police say it was a miracle no one was seriously hurt after this school bus plunged over a texas highway overpass, falling more than 15 feet. investigators say the bus was clipped by a car and landed on the door stop of a hotel below the overpass. one child and two adults were on board. they are all in stable condition. more fallout from two recent incidents involving loose seats on american airlines flights. while american scrambles to fix the problem, it's canceled 44 flights for today. yesterday airline officials began pulling nearly 50 planes out of service to make the

prosecuted. his goal is to scare as many teens as possible from driving while intoxicated. thank you for joining us. >> good morning. >> good morning. thank you for having us. >> steven, tell me more about the event that's going on there today. >> today we are going to be addressing the entire school today about the issues, about public safety, that people are being killed while they drink and drive. we need parents and children to focus on these issues, to understand there are danger zones, after school, friday night, saturday night. if they're not aware of what their children are and what they're doing, they're in danger. we want to save a live and enable others to save people about taking keys and making good decisions. that's our goal to work together to save lives. >> do events like this one, do you think they really drive the point home? >> absolutely. i think that kids listen.

when you hear shawn talk about the weight he carries from killing two people, from being incarcerated, from meeting me in the worst possible situation, you can hear a pin drop. these kids and the parents need this message, and shawn's impact is great. we're being proactive here as well as reactive. >> shawn, how did you get teamed up with the man who prosecuted you? >> steve came to me one time when i was getting out of jail, and he asked me if i wanted to be proactive in the community, asked me if i wanted to help people. i more than obliged. i was happy to. i want to really point out that this is a dangerous thing. people can't take this as a joke anymore. it's been more proactive in the past year or two, there's been more accidents, more drinking, more alcohol and we really want to drive home the point that it is very easy to go out there

and kill somebody just as i did, and we can't have that happen in our community anymore. >> when -- this was 2007, am i correct, when you were involved in this? >> it was november 19, 2006. >> 2006, okay. when this happened, you had been drinking. what were you thinking, or were you just not thinking? did you just think, well, nothing is going to happen to me, i'm only a teenager? >> of course, i had the invinciblity factor. you think you can do it every single time. we like to call it the invinciblity factor. every time you do it, it's the next step to doing it again. every time you make it home safely, you think nothing will happen to me. nothing can go wrong.

i know how to do this. really, it was an incompetent decision on my part and it cost two lives. >> do you think about it every day? >> absolutely. every day you wake up, you think about it, you think how can i be more proactive in the community? how can i keep other people from having to deal with what i dealt with, the emotional toll, the physical toll, it's really overwhelming. >> steven, let me ask you the thing i think that's the hardest about this is that -- and it's fairly natural, young people just think nothing bad is going to happen to them. is that the key factor here when it comes to making bad decisions like something like that? >> it is. it's inexperience. it is truly inexperience. we need to grab people. we need to grab parents and children and say, stand up, be accountable for your own actions and other people's actions. make a difference. too many people sit on the couch, they see something like

this and goes in one ear and out the other. we need people to make good decisions. your children are. if you know where an alcohol matter is, report that. drinking and driving kills people. statistics show it's not always the drunk driver that gets killed. it's the innocent person that hasn't been drinking that's in the car with the drunk driver. we need to empower our children and youth to make good decisions. this is a way to do it. this message is important. it starts at home with good conversations around the dinner table with your family. these conversations have to be had. >> steven and sean, thank you for spending time with us. i know you're involved in a program that begins in a couple of moments so we'll let you go. thank you. >> thank you. >> powerful stuff. thanks, tony.

a nationwide health alert. officials now say thousands of people could be at risk of getting fungal meningitis after getting steroid shots for back pain. so far, 35 people in six states have been diagnosed with the infection. at least five people have died. officials say the contaminated shots might have been delivered to as many as 23 states from a massachusetts pharmacy. already cases reported here in virginia and maryland. now health clinics are scrambling to notify patients who got the injections between july and september. >> cdc is working with state and local health departments to contact patients who may have received injections at the facilities who received the recalled lots of this medication to inform that they may have been exposed, to find out if they're having symptoms and instruct them to seek health care should they be ill. >> the officials say symptoms

occur usually between one to two weeks after infection. they include fever, new or worsening headache or neck stiffness. new this morning, all eyes are on the labor department, with just about 30 minutes until it releases the latest unemployment report. economists say september's jobless rate likely rose to 8.2%, higher than last month. but they also say the economy is slowly but steadily improving, with 111,000 jobs added. fresh off the first debate, president obama and mitt romney head to opposite sides of the commonwealth. the president will speak at a rally in fairfax. governor romney meantime spent the night in fisherville and will be back in the old dominion again monday to give a foreign policy address. speaking of the debate, the

just came forward after police had released information on these cases. she was walking right here in this springfield neighborhood. it is the same place where another woman says she was victimized by what police believe is a serial fondler. fairfax county police released a sketch of the suspect, described as in his 30s, with dark eyes and neatly trimmed beard. victims say he comes up behind them, grabs them and fondles them and runs away. he's victimized women and teenage girls at three different locations police say, all in the springfield area. one teenaged victim who talked to fox 5 says the man didn't say anything. >> i was looking and i saw a shadow on the sidewalk, and then i feel his arms around me. he started to touch me. i never met this guy before, i never saw him. he keep touching me for five

seconds or around that, so i push him back, and i had time to look at him. i saw his face, but he was wearing glasses and a red hat. he started running away towards the school. >> reporter: the suspect seems to strike at any time, in the morning, midday and at night. given the number of victims, police do believe there might be more people out there who just haven't come forward yet. one man we talked to here in this neighborhood told us he believes the suspect has to live somewhere around here, because all of the five cases that have been reported so far have been in this general vicinity. that's the latest here in springfield, back to you. >> thank you very much. also this morning, four people, including a firefighter, are recovering from injuries from a fire last night in northwest. it happened along k street. police say one victim suffered critical injuries after jumping from the second floor. still no word on a cause or the

still no word on a motive for this attack. sources tell the "new york times" it was more likely a case of work place violence than terrorism. american airlines says it knows now why several seats came loose. they say a combination of normal wear and tear, poor design and soda spilled into the tracks caused it. it's canceled more than 40 flights today and 50 flights yesterday to fix the problem. they say all will be fixed by tomorrow. while the rest of the country could see relief in the pumps, drivers in california may not be lucky. recent refinery outages and pipeline problems caused prices to jump as much as 18 cents. the average price for a gallon of gas in california is expected to hit more than $4.30, with some parts seeing more than five dollars. the national average is $3.78. let's switch gears now and

key swing state, she is a rising star. what you're referring to is we're going to talk to the debate guru, a republican debate consultant. he was michele bachmann's debate coach for a while, and she got great at the debates last summer, then mitt romney in the florida debate, where he obliterated newt gingrich. he got so much credit, that the romney camp let him go. we're going to talk to him, not to push romney or attack the president, whatever, but basically give us a lesson on how you debate and to take a look at clips almost like game tape for the redskins, and say here's where a guy did something good, here's where somebody did something bad and explain what he would tell one of his clients about how you debate. >> it's so important, because for everybody watching, they really got a more clear idea about who these gentlemen are, fair or not fair, i don't know. we're going to leave that up to

you to decide. but i must say, that's interesting background, because i think mitt romney came out very strong. i think everybody does agree with that in that debate. >> i'll give you one subtle example, allison, when obama was talking, and they've always got to figure they're on a split screen, because they don't know when the networks will take a split screen, always looking at obama with an engaged smile. meanwhile when romney was talking, obama was looking down and sometimes had the feeling of a school teacher scolding a school kid. it was bad body language for obama. i'm sure that's something that debate coaches say, look, always assume there's a camera on you and always look pleasant and interested and engaged, even when you're not talking. >> interested. we're reporting this morning the president's team is adjusting its strategy and we've seen mitt romney further go into his 47% comment, saying

he cares of course about 100% of americans. proof this is still ever evolving, chris? >> absolutely. we have more than a month still till the election, and look, it was a good first debate. i don't think there's any question that romney won. but there are two more debates, the vice presidential debate. and a month of day-to-day campaigning, and obama has been more effective in that campaigns and ads than romney has. the best you can say for romney, this was in danger of slipping away from him if he had a bad debate. he's made it competitive again, but a long way away from winning and both sides will go back with renewed vigor. >> how important is the vice presidential debate? >> i don't think terribly. people, according to all the political scientists, they vote for top of the ticket. i think millions of people will watch, and be helpful to romney after his victory in the first debate if ryan were to beat biden. but i think it's more

billy was five of six before before sunday's struggles, to be fair. is it a mental thing when you miss the first one. you've never missed three in a game. for billy, i got to be honest, when the fourth one came up for the game winner, i was nervous. this is the third one here and squeaks in the 41-yarder. mental at this point? >> a lot of kicking is mental. miss three kicks in a row, definitely affect you mentally. in the end, he hit the big one. in the end, nobody is going to remember the ones he missed. they'll remember you won the game. >> i know defensive backs say if i get burned on a play, i have to put it behind me and let it go. miss a kick, same principle? >> they say that. of course, you can't really push it out of your mind. yeah, you have to find a way to forget about it. each kick is a new kick. if you're dwelling on the ones you missed, it will affect you.

you have to stay positive and make the next one. >> the last time the redskins won at home was week two last year against the cardinals. you had a hand in that victory, if i'm not mistaken, by kicking that game winning field goal. again, not easy to do. but it's what you get paid to do, make the money kick as you talked about, billy made the money kick last week to win the game. again, you thrive on situations like this. >> that's the most fun. he about crushes my chest, picking me up and squeezing me. those are the kicks you live for. you definitely remember those. you wake up every day thinking about those kicks. i want to go back out there and kick field goals for someone, and get that feeling again. >> what are you doing now to stay loose? how are you staying in nfl ready shape? >> you know, i'm enjoying it. i'm able to spend a lot of time at home with my wife and son.

this pumpkin patch and have so many visitors. it's been great and we've enjoyed the journey. >> reporter: eric, you started the farm yourself. different location, then moved here. >> right. we moved here in '79. we were in herndon area in '72. had a road side stand in front of the house. had an honor system at one point. now we're exclusively out here. >> reporter: did you ever think it would get this big? this is like the attraction that people talk about, especially this time of year. >> yeah. in '79 we had a couple of school groups came out. a teacher wanted a hay ride. now it's evolved and every year we added a little new something and grown into what it is now. >> reporter: eric i want to bring in your son lucas. tell me, you know everything that's going on out here. you're like the guy to talk to. what's the big new thing this

year people want to make sure they come out and see? >> like eric said, we're excited about the 40th anniversary. this year specifically, my sister and i have been working on field of fear, which is exciting for the teenagers. that's really fun. one thing i'm really excited about is the new hay ride route, which is the first time we've changed it big time in nine years. and we added a new spaceship and changed the route a lot. everybody seems to like it. >> reporter: a spaceship, too? aliens? >> they come out and give everybody high fives. it's fun. >> reporter: and we'll talk about the market next hour. new things there? >> yeah, we added a bakery. we bake our own cookies now. i've gained 5 pounds, i think. it's great. it's a lot of fun. >> reporter: a lot of kids out here having fun as well.
